The Human Rights Council (HRC) was created by the United Nations General Assembly on March 15, 2006 with the purpose of promoting and protecting human rights globally. The Human Rights Council is made up of 47 United Nations Member States, which are all elected by the UN general assembly. The seats are distributed equally to different regions: thirteen pertaining to Africa, thirteen pertaining to Asia, six pertaining to Eastern Europe, eight pertaining to Latin America and the Caribbean, and seven pertaining to Western Europe. Apart from strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights, the Human Rights Council tackles situations and cases where the violation of human rights is present. The common goal of the participating nations is to find solutions to these issues presented whilst protecting the human rights of those affected. The Human Rights Council follows the articles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, believing that these are the fundamental rights that every human globally deserve to live and be protected by.
