Nicolás Soto

Deputy Secretary General of High School

Welcome to PANAMUN XXVI: Strengthening Our Humanity! My name is Nicolás Soto and I am this year’s Deputy Secretary General for High School (DSG for HS). I was born in Caracas, Venezuela yet I have lived here in Panama for almost 10 years now. I am currently a senior at the International School of Panama (ISP) and I am looking forward to pursuing my interest in Finance when I go to college. Besides finance and debating, some of my interests are running or working out in general, spending time with friends and family, as well as getting to meet new people!

My first debating experience took place when I was in the 8th grade and participated as a delegate at PANAMUN XXII: Technology for the 21st Century. Back then I participated as the delegate of Albania in the Human Rights Council. This experience was the one that set me on a path that continuously challenged me to become a stronger debater. I also had the opportunity to participate as a Co-Chair of the United Nations Development Programme at PANAMUN XXV: Closing Gaps, where I was exposed to a different PANAMUN perspective and challenged myself to become a stronger leader. My latest debating experience was at the 50th Anniversary of THIMUN The Hague. At this conference, our school represented Vietnam and I participated in the GA 2: ECOFIN committee. This was definitely a different experience due to the magnitude of the conference that had around 140 delegates per committee. Personally, MUN has been a catalyst in not only the creation of another interest but also in my development as a leader.

MUN is a great opportunity for students to explore the position of a country and debate on its behalf. It’s also a great occasion to get more informed on global issues and think critically about adequate solutions to solve them. On a more personal note, I would add that MUN also provides students with a chance to put their leadership skills to the test and learn from the outcome to grow as student leaders.

This year I will be focusing on inspiring both Chairs and Delegates to maximize their debating and leadership potential and to truly learn from this experience. I am looking forward to the product of the Secretariat’s hard work that will materialize at the end of October. With such a passionate and enthusiastic team, I am certain that this conference will exceed expectations.

Good luck and hope to see you soon!
