The United Nations General Assembly Third Committee (also known as the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee or SOCHUM) is one of six main committees at the General Assembly of the United Nations. This committee works on collaboration amongst nations to avoid the infringement of human rights and other social issues that affect people all over the world. Their job is to perform a review of all issues related to peacekeeping. Some issues that this committee has dealt with in the past include the protection of indigenous populations, protection of children, and the treatment of refugees. The resolutions created in this committee are created with the purpose of encouraging member states to apply them in their own countries, but they aren’t mandatory.
